Blue Water Bound

BWB is an experiential, hands-on learning program designed to positively influence social and learning skills. By putting abstract concepts to practical use and awakening young imaginations, BWB brings science and math alive in a whole new way. BWB is where learning becomes fun — and meaningful.

BWB children come from economically deprived households in the Stamford area — primarily from the 5th to the 10th grades, a critical period in the maturation process. BWB activities include:

Learning math by navigating and piloting

  • Learning about constellations
  • Plotting latitude and longitude
  • Charting a course
  • Calculating and correcting for winds and currents
  • Adding and subtracting tidal rises and falls

Experiencing science through sailing

  • Learning about wind, water and weather/meteorology
  • Respect the sea and its natural world/marine biology and ecology
  • How does my boat move? How does it turn? Physics.
  • Safe boating exercises
  • Running a weather station
  • Learning navigation
  • Field trips to Mystic Seaport and The Maritime Aquarium

The summer & swimming programs are staffed by teachers who have recently been taught to sail & teach swimming. They have a deep understanding of how to convey skills and content to young learners. Many also appreciate the fears and apprehensions of a new sailor/swimmer, having just experienced them personally!

This approach and program have been uniquely successful.
