Building Confidence in and on the Water

Although most youngsters in the BWB program live within only a few miles of Long Island Sound, few have experience in or on the water. Once they do, a whole new world opens up before them.

Swimming builds self-esteem and confidence.

Swimming lessons, safety instruction and lifeguard classes are key components of the BWB program.

If I can stop being afraid of the water and learn to swim, I can do anything.

Learning to swim literally can be a life-and-death matter, particularly for low-income youth. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children - and among minority kids 10 - 14, the rate is five times higher.*

Safety First

Of course, in all BWB programs the theme is always, “Safety First.” In addition to swim tests, BWB conducts on-going safety drills, “man-over-board” exercises, safe boating classes and first aid training.

The goal is to have young sailors return “safe and sound” from each voyage feeling confident with a heightened sense of self-esteem.

Sailing into Life

Sailing broadens horizons, delivering life-long benefits, such as swimming and water safety skills, intellectual development, self-reliance and teamwork.
